Safety Procedures for the Laboratory in Biology 342

1. Use caution at all times in handling the equipment.

• a. Carry microscopes with both hands
• b. Do not touch hot surfaces on hotplates or light bulbs for the microscopes.

• c. When cutting with razor blades or scalpels, cut away from yourself.

2. Be aware of the chemicals used in the lab.

• a. For stains, use small quantities for slide work and blot up any excess with kimwipes.

• b. Acetone, xylenes and other chemicals should be used under the hood.

• c. Wear aprons and gloves when instructed to do so.

3. When using preserved plants, section and dissect with forceps and needles provided. Do not breath the preservative; wash the plants off in water before dissecting.

4. When using living plants, be aware of any dangers such as thorns, allergens, etc. as instructed. Do not eat any of the plants used in the lab.

5. Place any broken glass in a container provided for disposal.
