Avoiding Plagiarism

>>>In an article entitled, "The First Peril: Farbication", the author, Chip Scalan discusses key points every web writer should know in order avoid plagiarism.

  1. Tips for Avoiding Plagiarism

    • Avoid what Marilyn Randall calls "note-book syndrome": Make sure that you make notes in your first draft where you want to put quotes.

    • Give credit. If you are using someone else's ideas, thoughts, or words, give them credit. It's better to be safe than sorry.

    • The only way you can use a quote from another publication is if you attribute it. If you are quoting from another publication, you have to cite that publication as well.

    • Consider using a text box or online links. Put links to other sources in your text.

    • Always identify the sources of your information as you are gathering it.

    • If you copy something verbatim be sure to put it in quotes. If you are not paraphrasing, put in quotes.

    • Note your sources: Make sure you note the title, the author, the year, the publication company, and where you obtained the source (article, online, book, etc...).

    • Manage your time wisely. If you plan ahead, than you will not feel tempted to plagiarism near the end.

    • The bottom line: "Be honest about where you got your information."
