The Development of the Twitterverse
Major Uses of Twitter
So now that the technological groundwork has been laid, what are people using Twitter for the most? Well according to a study done on Twitter usage habits, the most frequent type of post is still “Daily Chatter.” Essentially, this includes the “status updates” and personal details that stem from Twitter’s earliest days. Next most frequent are “Conversations.” These are discussions held between users that engage a unique “@reply” format (Java et al., p. 135). It is interesting to note that Twitter did not originally have a way for users to communicate other than by direct, private messages. Users began replying to others with an “@” symbol in front of the other username to indicate a dialogue. Eventually, the “@reply” system became so popular that Twitter formally added it to the types of special text recognized by the site’s formatting system.
The study by Java et al. concluded that the bulk of the remaining tweets consisted of information, URLs, or news (p. 135). News tweets in particular have become a major topic of discussion as of late. Many news networks have begun listening in on any buzz stirred up by popular users. Sometimes, a person directly at the scene of a major news event will post a tweet about it hours before any news media has a hold on the story. Pictures from a camera phone are also common, because a shortened URL can be attached to the news update as well.
