Yay, more ribs...

The title says it all.....check the ribs page for a new rating and a description of the ratings system.

In other news.....well it was my day off.....ate at the California Tortilla grand opening referenced previously....at lunchtime, not too early. I would have had to have gotten there before 6AM anyway to grab one of those year of free meals tickets. Oh well. I got to meet the founders (the cup people) and got a free burrito...sounds like a good day to me!

2 days till NOAC!

Complex transactions....complex day

Man, what a weary shift. Everything I did today seemed a bit crazy and confusing. First off, I had to sell a canoe to this guy who was rather difficult to work with. I'll not go into the details but it was fun to sell a big wooden canoe. Later I had some returns that were also quite trying. Generally it's not very typogenic (looking good in words), but you can take my word that it was pretty tough....

I'm still up in the air about the grand opening tomorrow but who knows.....could be good....(look below for details)

Maybe another update later....dunno.....

Off to "Blade: The Series!"

Random evening update....

It's beginning to look like I might not want to do the Grand Opening at Tortilla....because the coupons are only good for the Richmond store :(
Kinda hard to use them while living in Fairfax.....

It's weird how people seem to think the gas station is a place to make friends. Recently I've been filling up my tank and some guy will just call over and try to start a conversation. Especially when I'm in my gi, they wanna talk about karate....

The gas station is just not a good place to talk....first of all it's always sort of half lit so I never feel really secure, but also there is a lot of road noise and usually some distance between cars. That, along with the process of filling a tank, can be kind of distracting.

Very weird.....

Busy last couple of days....

First off, as you can see unless you're reading a feed (something which I'm now very concious of - see the Flock chicklet), I've changed the layout of the blog and some of the coloration. I hope you like it....I hope it makes things easier to read now too! I also tried to change around the front page but gave up on the CSS frustration of it....basically didn't initially design it as well as I would have liked....plus that picture gets in the way a little....maybe I should get rid of it....

So anyway, here's a funny work story:
One of my co-workers was upstairs trying to work some sales magic on some people buying stuff for their dog. These people had already give us a little trouble downstairs with their nit-pickiness so I expected something odd.

After they left my co-worker says to me "These two roll-up dog covers don't seem to have any SKU numbers or anything on them." She then professed that she'd already checked the Orvis.com website, the physical catalogue, and our AS400 inventory system....all without figuring out this item's number.

The thing is called "The Dog Hog" for some unknown reason, as it does not resemble a hog or do anything hog-like. I replicated her search for the item and I too was baffled at this thing.

I asked one of my older co-workers about it and he suggested running through the same logical steps and after he was satisfied that we had, he said that he had sold one himself a while ago. They must have come in a bag with the number on that.

Well, we looked and looked for others that had the correct number on them, but we found none......so on the suggestion of the older guy, I called our catalogue number......

They had no idea either!

Finally, I resorted to my Google-skill and came up with the item from the company that makes this dog hogging nightmare (an Orvis item would be much easier to figure out). I found a page relating to wholesale and called the number it provided.

After explaining my plight to the woman on the other end, she was kindly enough to look through old records and told me that Orvis hadn't made a purchase from them for over 6 months. Finally, after doing some digging, she discovered that one of the old invoices listed OUR SKU on the form. Salvation!

Better than that, the people that were originally interested in the "Hog" (who had long since left) returned inexplicably. We checked the price to be a measly $11.70 and rushed over to try and make the sale.

They weren't interested. Oh well.... :-(

Aside from that, I visited my Mac-oriented friend at her new job at the Apple store and had a good time discussing random tech stuff. Also got in my form to BSA, yay for registration!

NOAC is only a couple days away....gonna be awesome!

Ribs?

If any of you actually care about the subject, you're probably wondering "Why is the ribmaster not updating his ribs page?" Well it's because I haven't actually had any ribs recently (technically my mom made them, but as a non-pro she's exempt from my criticism).
Anyway, I hope to be eating at the Hill Cafe in Richmond sometime soon....heard they had ribs on their radio ad so we'll have to see if they're as good as they say they are.....

One thing that may be influencing rib updates is my dental health. I have developed this crazy underbite and unfortunately it has not only destroyed anything that my braces fixed, but will probably require a year of treatment that ends with a major surgery. Jaw surgery would be 2 days in the hospital and a month recovery (aka, jaw wired shut)....not looking forward to it. Sorry to complain openly about my upcoming misfortune but sometimes writing out this stuff can be theraputic.

In other news.....day off on Sunday.....uh....that's about it.....I'll update if I remember anything new....

ASM Stuff and other crazyness...good day though!

Well it's been a few days so here goes:

First off, I've update the ASM site, so hopefully all the people who check that will now have some conception of what we're up to! Also I hope that some day I'll be able to actually get hosting on the mason main server and not my personal space! Grrr for not making me webmaster yet!

I've finally gotten all of my stuff together for NOAC....except for that one little REGISTERING IN BSA thing that would validate me as an OA member.....can't do that till monday/tuesday at the earliest! Oh well....

Work is slow and somewhat uneventful as usual.....

California Tortilla HomeOn Thursday the 27th is our local California Tortilla's Grand Opening! If I'm in the first 10 people in line for it when they open I get free burritos for a year (one a week or so I hear). Otherwise I will just get a free burrito when durring regular hours.....no loser here....best of all it's my day off!

Finally, I'm really into this new Sci-Fi show "Eureka," which is about a secret town that scientists do all of their work for the government. Very nifty!
Other good shows include "Blade: The Series" (though the fights aren't as good as the movies), "The 4400" (i'm starting to get into it), and of course all the Stargate series. I like "Doctor Who" too, but that's over 100 days to wait for new episodes.....last one almost made me cry *sniff*.

I had a pretty nice day off and a good haircutt! Even my stocks soared today!

Last few days

Well, first off, I built two chairs today....Adirondack Chairs that we sell at Orvis to be specific. They came dissassembled so I got out my car's toolkit and screwed um up. It was cirtainly tricky, but a welcome change from a slow Monday's traffic.

Folding Adirondack Furniture
I made two of the ones that are "Barn Red."

I also went up to see Hilary yesterday. 200 miles of driving was a little bit tough but we had a great time golfing, walking by the park, and generally hanging out. Hurray for Hilary!

The weather here is HOT, as I assume as it is for anyone else who reads this blog. And it's not even August yet...:(

I must say, I'm still not a very good blogger so far. I only tend to write about random stuff that I do, nothing more important or interesting really. If anybody who knows me has any ideas for this blog, I'd welcome the input.

Till later!

Updates

I made a few little updates to my layout and stuff so the sidebar should show up better for those of you with fat resolutions or browser windows that aren't very wide...I know I have the latter and it's gotten two annoying to deal with anymore.

Another slow day at work......

NOAC (see link on links page) approaches swiftly...gotta get a form in though....I hate paperwork!

Oh and the dreaded "i" key is acting up again so I'm considering getting a new keyboard from Dell, dunno though....

A Word of Wisdom....

People are only too old to learn only when they say they are too old to learn. For some this happens at 13, for others it never happens. -anecdote of the day

Tired....I sleep!

grar

Well it's been a frustrating day for me. After dealing with 2 plummers, 1 mall maintainance guy, crazy shipments and other stuff like that, work has me a little worn out. I'm not sure whether I will go to karate tonight.....

I will say how I did in the Coldsnap Pre-release in Richmond:

First of all, I played in one flight of the Coldsnap Sealed Deck Tournament. Unfortunately, I went 0-1-2 (wins, ties, losses). No free packs for me.
Next I went in for a Ice Age/Alliances/Coldsnap draft because it looked fun and I'd never done a formal draft before. Unfortunately, I drafted somewhat poor cards and was eliminated round one. I DID PULL A MINT FORCE OF WILL OUT OF THE ALLIANCES PACK THOUGH!!!!!!!! (everyone was somewhat put out at that I think)

So I'm not a great Magic player, but I had a lot of fun and even got another signed proof of a Sliver (shifting sliver).

Work, karate, and a little bit of insight from this blogger....

Well for one, Happy Birthday Afton! Sweet....18?

Anyway, I had a pretty uneventful day today...pretty slow at work....got paid!....also went to karate and taught the Bo class there....that was fun, but only an hour....(here's the wikipedia for Bo). Oh and the guy in the picture below is totally holding it wrong...

Speaking of Bo, I have had some interesting ideas (or I think so at least) about how the Bo can represent a way of living...

A bo (棒) is usually around six feet long and normally wielded with both hands.

The Bo consists of a straight pole about 6 feet long. Whether it is tapered or rounded, it is always balanced. The Bo should, in fact, be able to be balanced on one finger if it is correctly weighted. This speaks to one way people can imitate a Bo. As I have seen many times, students who do not hold their Bo correctly (because their sense of balance is incomplete) can not weild it with complete certainty. Balance is essential to both mastery of the Bo and mastery of one's life.

The Bo should always be straight. A warped Bo leads to greater difficulty in control and even a possibility of breakage. The path of a student must also be straight, for too many diversions from the basic principles of a good life will become permanent changes in character.

The Bo's straightness also can inspire physical imitation. When teaching stances or strikes, the Bo always sets an example of the perfect line. Karate is based on straight lines in figure and form. Modeling oneself on a Bo is a good way to check posture and angles.

The simple qualities of the Bo may be summed up much like the qualities of Karate. The "Way of Karate" is called Karate-do, so too, then, should the "Way of the Bo" be called Bo-do. A straight, balanced path cannot help but lead to great places.

Hey, well my site now has an RSS feed. It uses Feedburner to get to the Blogger feed. Just click the shiney icon that should pop up next to the address bar....it's the little radio signal thingy (which stands for RSS standardization).

Work was pretty good today.....that's about it on that....

Tomorrow I will hopefully have lunch with a friend down the street....though I haven't contacted her to confirm that.....

Otherwise, I'm just gearing up for the pre-release....though I'll probably have to go alone... :(

Just in case...

You never know when I might go back to firefox (i'm a Flock user now) so this is a test of a blogging extension.....

Folding box cutter!

How awesome is this!

Quick Change Folding Lock-Back Utility Knife

Folding Box Cutter from Kobalt

I just got this after seeing my assistant manager with one. I was cutting boxes all day and this thing is awesome...only $11.xx too!

Helped train a new girl today, that was fun. Amazing how I've learned all the stuff so quickly!

That's about all I got. Had a nice dinner tonight and after a shorter shift tomorrow (7 hours), I get 2 days off.
