Between 1830 and 1860 many women argued several issues about the equality of marriage. Arguments like the right to
divorce or gain custody of their own children were discussed during that time period. Because of the unjust economic system,
women had no choice but to work in jobs that paid poorly. Many feminists tried to argue that women should be treated as
equal as men. Women started to demonstrate that they too have talent to work hard and get paid well. Harriet Beecher
Stowe was a woman who wrote books on political subjects such as slavery and women equality. She, for example was
getting paid more for writing books than what her husband was receiving for his work. Since women were looked upon as
weak and useless in hard labor, Americans tried to push them more towards the marketplace. Women believed that if they
were not happy, they should have the right to leave the unhappy marriage, and not forced to life a miserable life. Men would
force thier wives to have sex with them even if the woman had no desire to be intimate with her mate. These days, women are
working and striving to become more independant. Women are going to college and majoring in high paid occupations like
lawyers and doctors. Men, now look at their wives as a companion and an equal human being. Religion plays a part in
marriage as men and women believe in staying faithful to only their mate. In the early 1800s, women were basically look as
slaves because men believe they ran America and women should have no
say but to cook, clean and take care of the kids.
