Regulating Television

Home

Televisions are a masterpiece that was invented in the late 1920s.  Televisions have made a huge impact on our society today and in the past.  They provide society with vital information, entertainment, viewing pleasure, and company when one has nothing to do.  Almost every home in America owns a TV.  Although television broadcasters are regulated by the  Federal Communications Commission (FCC) which was established by Franklin Roosevelt, these days broadcasters show many programs that are on the borderline of obscene and indecent.  When talking about nudity, the FCC does a great job of blocking it out of programs broadcasted because it wouldn't be right for a 7 year old boy to be eating dinner while watching nude women swim on the beach on channel 5.  I am talking more about violence, drugs, alcohol, and sexual situations more like kissing and the exposure of sexual body parts like legs, the stomach or a womans back.  Ofcourse, I am not saying to totally cover up the people on TV but shows today are definitely not like they used to be back in the 1950s.

I believe TV broadcasting should serve the public good as well as profit.  If TV broadcasting were to serve the public good all the way, then eventually the broadcastings would be draining much more costs from the public, community and the government.  True, it would help the public by providing the public with 100% information and 100% entertainment, but in a way it would completely spoil our American society.  On the other hand, if TV broadcasting were to be entirely for profit, then people may lose interest viewing too many commercials and may find others things to do.  It would probably drive the viewer away.  I would defined "public good" as anything that serves as a positive to the public, benifiting them.  Although there is so much violence, drugs, alcohol, sex in this world, I think the government has too much stuff on their plate at the moment.  They should just let the FCC continue doing their job.  Our society likes to be kept on our toes, and I believe if the gov't were to step in and regulated many broadcastings, they may turn TV in to a boring box to look at.  Restricting nudity is still a positive thing in my book because, no one would want  their son/daughter looking at nudity on TV, when they should be watching cartoons and gameshows.  I think that is why there is cable TV now, to provide channels and programs with more obscene acts, more violence, more drugs, reality shows, because at the end what does it come down too?   It's all entertainment.

In conclusion, after taking the polls most of the class chose the same answers as I did stating that television should be regulated against indecent material lightly because our society today likes some action whether its about sex, violence or drugs.  Sad to say, but I believe that those three topics are what keep Americas' eyes on the TV.
