Hachi-Ko (Chuken Hachi-Ko)
The Akita is known for being a loyal breed. This loyalty is exemplified by Hachi-Ko.
Hachi-Ko was a gift from a former student to Professor Eizaburo Ueno of Tokyo University.
Day in and day out the two would walk to Shibuya Station to drop off and Hachi-Ko would meet Prof. Ueno when he returned.
May 21, 1925, Prof. Ueno passed away at the University due to a stroke.
For ten years, Hachi-Ko would travel to the station to wait for his master, til he was found dead at the spot where he kept vigil.
Moved by the dog's loyalty, a statue was placed in the Shibuya Station, and the day of his death is a day of official mourning.
