Safety Regulations for Plant Biology Laboratories
1. Use caution in this laboratory as you would in any laboratory situation. Keep coats and books away from bench tops and the aisles.
2. Do not eat or drink in the laboratory (this includes the lab
materials themselves).
3. NO open-toed shoes can be worn in the lab.
4. Never mouth pipette liquids.
5. Place broken glass in the special box for glass, and return razor blades to the instructor's bench. In case of an accident notify the instructor - the emergency phone number is posted on the bulletin board. A first aid kit is at the front of the laboratory on the side bench.
6. Be especially careful with razor blades and probes. Cut away from your body or place objects on glass slides and cut down to the slide.
7. Keep the microscope cords on the benches - do not allow them to trail down the side. Be especially careful of the floor outlets and the cords that attach to the bench outlets.
8. The fire extinguishers are in the hallways in hidden cases - there is one at either end of the laboratory. Please note the location of these, since the university does not mark them in any way.
9. During the first 15 minutes of each laboratory, your laboratory instructor will give you any instructions that are specific for the individual exercise, including any dangers of the materials being handled. BE THERE and LISTEN. Absence does not absolve you of responsibility for these instructions.
Sign the statement below, detach and give to your laboratory instructor. Keep these instructions with your laboratory notebook.
