Online Resources
Unfortunately, quality online teaching resources in the area of sport history that address race and/or gender are disappointingly slim. The following is a list of the best available that you may find useful.
Jackie Robinson and Other Baseball Highlights, 1860s–1960s This Library of Congress site from their American Memory collection is a useful site on Jackie Robinson’s entry into major-league baseball. Includes time line, collection of online sources, and exploration of how Robinson's career influenced popular culture.
A Look at Life in the Negro Leagues Good site produced by Kansas State University that also includes a look at integration of the minor leagues. Includes good oral and aural history.
Black Baseball’s Negro Baseball Leagues and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum provides a good overview of the Negro Leagues, including information on the teams and players, although they tend to be celebratory, of course, and a bit sacchrine.
Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles has a great virtual archive online that includes a searchable database of both primary and secondary sources. Great resources on the Olympic games.
All-American Girl’s Professional Baseball League covers history on the women's professional league that was started during World War II and ran until 1954. Includes short history and some limited, but good, online resources.
