For my review essay, I will focus on
web sites that examine the history of African Americans in sports. The
sites that I plan to review include "By Popular Demand: Jackie
Robinson and Other Baseball Highlights, 1860s-1960s"; "The
Struggle of the Black Athlete"; "The Changing Status of the
Black Athlete in the 20th Century United States"; "Black Baseball's
Negro Baseball Leagues"; and "Breaking the Barriers: African
Americans in Sports." The non-digital examples of the genre that
I plan to include in my discussion are Jules Tygiel, Baseball's
Great Experiment: Jackie Robinson and His Legacy, expanded ed.
(New York: Free Press, 1986); and Patricia Vertinsky and Gwendolyn Captain,
"More Myth than History: American Culture and Representations of
the Black Female's Athletic Ability," Journal of Sport History
25 (Fall 1998).
