Work Experience

The World & I Online, Washington, DC (October 2006-present) Editorial Assistant: Currently working part-time to develop content for a monthly online educational magazine. The World & I Online magazine features articles covering a wide variety of academic topics for teachers and students to use, including sections on politics, history, world cultures, the arts, science, and more. Responsibilities include working closely with the publisher and managing editor to develop ideas for themes and topics to feature in the magazine, researching Internet sources for scholarly articles to reprint, organizing the articles into sections that appear on the website, and writing introductions to the sections discussing the subject matter.

SAGE Systems Technologies, LLC, United States Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, DC (October 2005-August 2006) Technical Writer: Worked as a SAGE contractor for one of the company’s clients, the U.S. Coast Guard, in the Human Element and Ship Design Division at the Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC. Responsibilities included writing and editing numerous technical documents that promote the division’s voluntary programs in crew and ship safety.

Created and managed textual and graphical materials to support crew and ship safety programs. Produced a quarterly newsletter which included articles, summaries of news stories, hyperlinks, graphics, and upcoming events. Selected material to use for the newsletter and wrote drafts of the articles and news summaries. Wrote articles for the Coast Guard magazine Proceedings. Created and edited PowerPoint presentations for delivery.

The Times Community Newspapers, Reston, VA (May 2004-August 2004) Newspaper Intern: Summer intern for Steve Cahill, Executive Editor of The Times Community Newspapers. Duties included reporting and writing various news stories about events taking place throughout Fairfax County, while communicating directly with sources both by telephone and by field interviews. Received exclusive byline credit for eight news/feature articles published during the internship.

Fairfax County Government Center, Fairfax, VA (May 2003-August 2003) Administrative Intern: Summer intern for Katherine K. Hanley, Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Responsibilities included a variety of administrative and clerical assignments in support of the Chairman’s functions and activities. These tasks included researching local newspapers for the chair and sending letters to constituents.
