Spring 2004

Web-Based Learning (WBL) was a course conducted completely at a distance. With the help of a course faciliator and Blackboard, we learned about online learning as online learners. As students enrolled in this course, our responsibility was to participate in the online discussions, read assignments, conduct research, complete online group activities, and complete other course assignments, such as lesson designs and this portfolio. While the requirements may seem familiar, the interesting (and challenging) aspect of this course was that it was completed all online.

The course was divided into four sections as organized below. The first part of the course explored online learning and facilitating. We reflected on ourselves as online learners, dealing with the management of our time and our online communication skills. The rest of the class dealt with bringing web-based activities and components of online learning into our classrooms. The next three sections of the course were organized by Judi Harris' activity structures. Harris' has searched and categorized many existing projects that reside on the Internet, which can be used to inspire a variety of web-based projects for the classroom. These activities are great to use as models and to generate discussion on the ways our students can use the Internet in a learning environment.
