Altering
Digital
Images
in Appleworks
| Altering existing images is a favorite
activity of my students when using graphics programs. They
recently completed an art project in
which
they had to "spoof" an existing advertisement. Using Adobe
Photoshop,
they had a great time trying out tools such as the lasso and magic wand
to
cut or isolate pieces from one image and add to another. We
completed a
similar activity in this class by taking an image of ourselves and
making
alterations. I pasted in other images; as well I added colors
and different shapes. If I had more time, I would have added a
real sky and more landmarks. I think it would be an interesting conversation to have with students in why and when images are altered. Images could be altered for informative purposes, such as showing the harmful effects of smoking to a set of lungs over time. Images may also be altered for expressive purposes, such as capturing an image that is physically impossible (i.e. placing a Hummer on the top of Mt. Everest). Altering images offers opportunities to add elements of creativity and interpretation. I liked how we altered our mask outside of the computer by adding three-dimensional features. This was a interesting twist to the concept of altering images by moving away from the computer. |
