PhD Studentship and Stipend in Innovation – A Computational Social Science Approach (currently filled )

Innovation through designing is one of the most influential ways in which humans change their physical and virtual worlds. We design innovative products that have the capacity to change the lives of all who use them. Given its ubiquity it is surprising how little is known about innovation as a process and the policies that control it.

This project, funded by the National Science Foundation, uses
multi-agent systems to build simulations of innovation and innovation policies that connect funders of research, generators of research output, venture capitalists, users of research output who design products, and consumers. The interactions between the various players changes their cognitive behavior.

This is an opportunity for a student who wants to work in a multidisciplinary field at the graduate level. The PhD will be taken in the Department of Computational Social Science at George Mason University under the supervision of Dr John Gero. A background in design science, computer science,
cognitive science or a related field would be an advantage.

The studentship provides tuition support and separately there is provision for a possible graduate studentship with a stipend.

US National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)
Applications due early November each year for enrolment the following year

The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are in the early stages of their graduate study. All applicants are expected to have adequate preparation to begin graduate level study and research by Summer or Fall of their enrolment. In most cases, this will be demonstrated by a bachelor’s degree or a master's degree of no more than 12 months duration earned prior to Fall of their enrolment year. Applicants need to be U.S. citizens, nationals or permanent residents.

These fellowships are available for all scientific areas and include PhD studies in Psychology, Computer Science, Computational Social Sciences or Engineering in the following areas of research by Dr Gero:

  • design cognition: protocol studies of designing - including visual reasoning, effect of technology, team work, creativity for details
  • design computing: computational models of creative designing; situated design computing; mult-agent models of designing for details
  • cognitive neuroscience of designing: brain behavior while designing for details

Information about the NSF Graduate Research Fellowships and method of application can be found here and here.
