Pro ToolsWelcome to the present and future of creating music. Its name is Pro Tools. Pro Tools is one the newest revolutions in the way music is created. Created by the company DigiDesign, it offers professionals and amateurs alike a means with which to capture and present their audio explorations. There are several different versions of Pro Tools, designed to accommodate different price ranges. The full versions are wonderful tools for a professional artist to use. However, even the cheaper versions such as Digi 002 are certainly not slouches. Even the free version offered by the company is more than adequate for many amateur user's needs. As one journalist notes, "What technological miracle has made it possible for me to record music that other people might want to listen to without stuffing jelly into their ears? It's software called Pro Tools, which has transformed the world of audio recording. It has freed artists from the confines of traditional studios; it has made professional sound available to people on a budget; and as new technology always does, it has changed the music itself" (Edwards para. 2).
While the expensive professional model is used by countless recording studios across the country, the free version has changed the way many musicians record. As one reviewer notes, "Pro Tools FREE can be used from the most remote locations. Now time consuming tasks like editing, compiling and mixing can be done on the road, in the air or even on the beach" (Sellers para. 7). "The free download will, in DigiDesign's words, 'turn any qualified computer into a Pro Tools audio workstation without any additional hardware'" (Sellers para. 2). |
