Mountain Biking

small logo

There are certainly no shortage of mountain biking trails in Fairfax. There are miles of singletrack ridden every day. Local mountain biker Omar Elitriby, tries to ride four times a week.

"There's lots of trails around here," Elitriby said. "There's a little something for everyone, if you just know where to look."

The trails in Fairfax cater to all experience levels. Some of the trails have steep climbs and descents. Others are more calm, and serve as a good place to learn.

"I first started riding over at Wakefield," said Michael Loreto, a 22-year-old student at George Mason, "now I spend most of my time at Fountainhead, but still enjoy riding Wakefield when I'm pressed for time."

The four most popular trails in Fairfax are:

Fountainhead

This trail was built specifically for mountain biking. Located in Clifton, it contains several loops of varying lengths. The trail is for advanced riders, and features steep rocky terrain. Fountainhead is maintained, and because of this it often closes during wet weather.

Difficult Run

The difficult run bike trail is located in Reston, and begins by the Skatequest ice rink. This is a continuous trail that runs about 14 miles into Great Falls Park. The trail offers several options for difficulty, providing both beginners and experts with interesting trails.

Wakefield and Lake Accotink

Technically, Wakefield and Lake Accotink are two seperate areas. They are both located right off 495 and are connected by a path that runs under Braddock Road. These areas are trail networks, with no particular beginning or end.

Riders can create their own paths by mixing and matching the different trails. These trails are relatively easy, but still offer many obstacles like log bridges and and creek-crossings to test more advanced riders.
