Mather Gorge, in Great Falls, also offers boaters a place to play. The falls themselves are class VI rapids and should only be attempted by experts. The class II and III rapids found in the gorge are constantly changing, and offer boaters a good place for practice, as well as several surf holes to play in.
There are not as many options for kayakers in Fairfax. The only river with whitewater is the Potomac. Despite this, there is still plenty of fun for kayakers. "Great Falls is fun," said Derek Cross, a 20-year-old kayaker, "on a good day there are plenty of good hits and surf holes. The river is constantly changing, so every day is a little different." During periods of heavy rain, some kayakers take to local streams. Many of these streams are only accessable for short periods of time, and are extremely unpredictable. |
