Dividing Spaces, Dividing Races: Residential Segregation in Richmond, Virginia (Web Project Proposal)

Introduction | Content | Rationale | Structure | Technical Issues | Web Reviews

I expect research for this project to take at least 1-2 years. Researching the maps of Richmond, creating databases from census data, and discerning how the two go together will be the most time consuming aspects of the research process. Web-page creation can be done with a simple HTML editor such as Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, while photo-editing and graphics can be created using Adobe Photoshop.

The least labor-intensive part of the project is the transcription of the various court cases, newspaper articles, city council minutes, and other print primary source material. This will require simple transcriptions into an HTML format. Because of the limited focus of my project, I do not feel it necessary to make these documents searchable, but that may be advantageous should the project expand beyond the boundaries thus far.

The most time-consuming, and most expensive, will be the creation of the various dynamic maps for the site. The maps for the site will be drawn in Adobe Illustrator or other vector-based graphics application. From there, someone skillful with Flash will need to put the maps on the web. I plan to learn Flash myself, but it may take some time before I acquire the skill to create the dynamic maps.
