Historical Scholarship on the Web: A Critical Review
[
] [ ] [ Comparisons
]
Comparisons of websites allow us to see elements of digital media
that work effectively as well as elements that hinder overall usability.
With that in mind, this review compares several websites based on
three braoder criteria:
-
- How is the story "told"? What is the narrative's form?
Is it linear? Non-linear? Is it solely text driven, or told through
visuals? Are there long paragraphs of text, or is the narrative
broken into "chunks"? In what ways do the boundaries
of the narrative help readers find the overall message of the
site? Most importantly, does the style and structure of the narrative
allow readers to find significance and meaning through their experience
on the site?
-
- What is the author's point of view? What are the key points
of the site? What is the thesis (if indeed there is one)? How
does the author(s) use primary and secondary sources?
-
- What is the author-reader relationship? How does the author
build boundaries or "funnel" the readers activity to
assist them in finding the central argument of the site? How much
agency/input does the reader have in constructing or interpreting
the narrative?
