10 Reasons There’s A Bright Future for Journalist

Mark Glaser believes that the technological advances of new media could potentially result in a renaissance era for the journalism profession. Here are his reasons for a bright future in journalism

1) More Access to More Journalism Worldwide: The Internet gives all of us content from different communication channels (Newspaper, TV, Blogs, and Podcasts) all over the world. We are no longer limited to the local media for news. The internet has made it possible so that we can get information from anywhere in the world.

2) Aggregation and Personalization Satisfies Readers: Because of internet sites such as Google News and My Yahoo, we are able to get the information that we want displayed on our web page. Aggregating content from other sources is a way of saying that, “we have all the answers here.”

3) Digital Delivery Offers More Ways to Reach People: Traditional media only offered their content in a very limited fashion. Now everyone can get the information that they want online. The Online possibilities has unbounded journalism from its traditional constraints.

4) There are more fact-checkers than ever in the history of journalism: Bloggers and online free-thinkers have provided an important check and balance to information on the web. These unofficial fact checkers are good for journalism since journalists know they have to be completely ethical or suffer the consequences.

5) Collaborative Investigations Between Pro and Amateur Journalists: The internet allows strong correspondence between professional and amateur journalists. Journalists, regardless of rank, working together and combining their skill set is good for the business.

6) More Voices are Part of the News Conversation: You no longer have to work for a mainstream news organization to be part of the news. Bloggers and independent online journalists can provide good information and challenge the industry’s conventional norms. They can also take the power away from the editorial boardrooms and bring it back to the people.

7) Greater transparency and a More Conversational Tone: Thanks to blogs, journalists can go to media websites and explain their conflicts on interests in greater detail which ultimately leads to more transparency and trust between the news site and the reader.

8) Growing Advertising Revenues Online: Almost every forecast for online advertising shows double digit percentage in revenues over the next five years.

9) An Online Shift from Print Could Improve our Environmental impact: Online media has a much drastic ecological impact compared to print. Online news over print actually saves trees which helps reduce global warming.

10) Stories Never End: Online stories have a much longer lifespan compared to print stories. Online allows reporters to update stories and add more facts as the story progresses.
