    Biography

Sarah Bui received her undergraduate degree in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013, after which she completed a Master's degree in Biology at George Mason University in 2016. Sarah is continuing her studies at GMU in the Biosciences PhD program. She is also NREMT certified and PCA licensed. Sarah was awarded the Elaine Joyce Teaching Award in 2016. She teaches undergraduate lab courses at GMU and has taught 400-level course recitation. She currently serves as Internal VP on the Board of the National Organization of Vietnamese Leaders in DC and is a pulmonary fibrosis advocate.

  • Research

Sarah's main research is focused on mapping the apoptotic pathways induced by ER stress and mitchondrial damage in IPF fibroblasts. Particularly, she is interested in the role of fibroblast oxidative phosphorylation on the pathogenesis of IPF. In addition, she has investigated the correlation of H. Pylori infection and IPF using patient biopsies. From fresh lung samples, she has isolated human-derived primary cell populations and observed their contrasting behavior under various toxicological challenges. Her previous projects have included a review of the newest developments in the ability to control gene transcription with optogenetics and the expression of a recombinant protein (an interleukin receptor) in HEK-293 cells.
