• U.S. - USSR Exchange Committee on Marine Pollution (visit to Soviet Union, 1974, sponsored by USEPA and State Department)
• Key to City of St. Petersburg FL (Service as environmental member of City Planning Commission) 1976 .
• NAS Advisory Panel on USSR and Eastern Europe 1986-89 .
• Science policy research grant to explore economics, policy, and science at the U.S. ocean frontier; conducted with assistance of SUNY Stonybrook graduate students and faculty (Olin Foundation, 1988-89).
• Pettersson Medal for Excellence in Ocean Research, Royal Swedish Academy of Science, 1999.
• USGS coordinator of joint Tulane University – USGS biocomplexity research study on Mississippi River, sponsored by National Science Foundation ( U.S., Geological Survey Star Award).
• USGS Star Award for minority recruitment activities, 2001.
