Integrative Assignment #1: Photo Essay
Fareeha Khan Seminar A

Orientalism, certain depictions of Middle Eastern people, can easily become negative when these notions are based on stereotypes and propaganda. When people don’t challenge ideas they are left to believe the general consensus that can unfairly target people in a bad light. This is why globalization is used as a means of avoiding misinterpretations about people and giving them the opportunities to establish themselves despite what stereotypes perceive them to be.

Part I

slavery

Colonization is a concept that clashes with positive globalization. When one society truly believes they are better than another they do incredibly inhumane things to prove this to the people that they classify as a culture unworthy of human rights.

poma

Guaman Poma is a person that stood up for his people when he felt the consequences of ethnocentrism form in his Andean hometown. He wrote a 1200 page letter to King Phillip III of Spain expressing the beauty of the Incan culture and what they have suffered due to Spanish conquest (Worlds Together Worlds Apart, Chapter 3, 93).

Similar to Poma’s attempts, Coco Fusco made a satire out of pointing out the mistreatment of humans because of their identity. She and fellow artist Guillermo Gomez-Pena dressed as indigenous people stuck in a cage at a museum just as early Native Americans were treated when the British colonized America (Fusco, 18-25).

Mexicans faced gravely unfair treatment when their traditional cultural ceremonies had to be done in secret since the Spanish put great efforts into ending all of their prized customs. In this scene from The Other Conquest an underground ritual is taking place in the confinement of a cave.

In traditional villages in the Middle East women are completely covered up, similar to their lack of rights in the culture. With the help of globalization, these women can keep the joy of their culture while their community can have the opportunity to gain an understanding of equal humanity rights.

European Imperialism took over the world in the 1800s simply because they believed their culture prevailed over those of other countries and they attempted to spread the “gift.” This concept of imperialism overpowered the basic rights of the oppressed people (Overfield, 144).

Transculturation is an effect of globalization in which two cultures are able to resolve a conflict naturally over time (Pratt, 35). This process can be sped up by communication and compromises, as Bill Clinton represents by his stance as he watches an attempt at Jordanian-Israeli peace.

The countries in green represent the current members of the World Trade Organization (WTO), a direct result of globalization. The WTO supervises international trade and helps keep track of trade agreements, connecting countries on a level of comradery. This is an example of a massive Transculturation attempt (Worlds Together Worlds Apart, Chapter 2, Overfield).

Using globalization as a means to connect the world and create a more collective, united mindset will be the basis for what will ultimately end conflict.

Part II
What are ways in which globalization can be used to result in positive outcomes that would behoove nations in conflict?

Part III
How might the work you have completed during these past two weeks enhance your capabilities to act as an effective citizen?

The content of the past two weeks of NCLC 130 has caught my interest from the beginning. Visits to the National Gallery of Art and introducing me to incredibly fascinating individuals such as Coco Fusco have been experiences I have enjoyed to the fullest. These experiences have also brought issues and events to my attention that are of great importance but aren’t being confronted on an every day basis. These issues include the effects of Orientalism, the hypocritical tendencies of the general consensus, and how easily public opinion can trump independent views. For example, Coco Fusco’s museum touring cage performance was a lively satire that highlighted the ways the public will ignore the inhumane treatment of people put in a cage but the same public will act appalled when reminiscing of the mistreatment of native people by the colonists. This made me incredibly aware of how genuine my actions are in my society. It also reminded me to be aware of people that prejudices and racism in our culture. Integrating history and current events is a way of truly amercing me as both a citizen and a student into society.
