Reflection: EDUC 802: Research and Scholarship in Education

I was actually a little bothered about being forced to take this required course. Specifically, the purpose of this course is to introduce incoming PhD students to the research opportunities as well as the resources that are available within the college. Mainly, this course is designed to help students form their portfolio committee and ultimately their dissertation committee. However, I felt as though I shouldn’t have been required to take the course because I already had a very strong idea of what I wanted to pursue and wanted to focus all my efforts into advancing my ideas with other related courses. Upon reflecting about the course for our final paper, however, I realized how important it was to understand how vast the field of education is. I realized that in order for me to be a successful researcher, I cannot just focus in on what interested me, but allow myself to understand other fields and more importantly, find opportunities to collaborate to develop more interdisciplinary approaches to understanding education. I realized and learned that I cannot continue my tunnel vision approach to research if I truly want to contribute to the field of educational psychology.
