His research has focused on Ordovician and Silurian stratigraphy of the Appalachians, hydrocarbon production in the Devonian Oriskany Sandstone, geologic mapping in the Appalachian Valley & Ridge, and currently the distal geologic features associated with the Chesapeake Bay impact structure. He is also on the faculty of the North Carolina-Virginia field course held in New Mexico and Colorado. Rick was Vice Chair of the Southeastern Section of the Geological Society of America, and Co-chair of the 2004 Northeast-Southeast Meeting. He was Co-founder and first president of the Southeast Section of the Society for Sedimentary Geology. He has held offices in the Geology Section of the Virginia Academy of Science, and the Geological Society of Washington. He was an Associate Editor for the Journal of Geoscience Education. He has taught courses in Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Sedimentation and Stratigraphy, Oceanography, Geomorphology, Energy and Mineral Resources, Geology of Virginia, Geological Development of North America, Field Mapping Techniques, Geologic Map Interpretation, Geological Field Mapping, and Earth Science Policy.
