Dr. Balint’s current research focuses on community-based conservation in eastern and southern Africa. He spent the Spring 2005 semester on sabbatical at the College of African Wildlife Management (Mweka) in Tanzania. More generally over the past few years, he has explored various aspects of links between environmental conservation and socioeconomic development, conducting research on this topic both abroad—in El Salvador, Honduras, Mongolia, Mauritius, Nicaragua, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe—and in the United States. Before entering the University of Maryland in 1996 to study environmental issues, he taught English for more than 20 years in Albany, New York's alternative inner-city public high schools.
