General Information
- Beginning in the 2004-2005 academic year, faculty, students and staff at Mason have planned a 2-week schedule of activities around Earth Day in mid-April, to educate the university community about its multiple roles in environmental stewardship. These Earth Day events are a valuable contribution to the University's extra-curricular intellectual and political culture. Perhaps the biggest highlight was the participation of David Orr, Paul Sears Distinguished Professor at Oberlin College, to be the featured speaker of Earth Week. His three presentations were informed, articulate, interesting, and provided the audience with real ways they could be a part of the solution in an environmentally threatened world. Plans for Earth Day 2005-2006 include a series of lectures by Bill McKibben. Stay tuned and get involved! For more info, contact Susan Crate.
- Green Building Initiative. Mason Green Building Initiative As a spin off from the first Mason Earth Day celebration, faculty, students and staff formed a Green Initiative Group to begin realizing many of the ideas shared during the two-week Earth Day celebration. The group decided to form sub-groups based on the specific projects members wanted to pursue. The subgroups to date include green building, greening of the curriculum, students activism, and the greening of campus services and stores. The group meets monthly to report activity of sub-groups and to participate in the logistics for Earth Day, as the time is appropriate. For more info, Susan Crate.
