HWC 55 Web Board Instructions

Fall 1998, Sections D & P

Shelley Reid, Austin College

Find the Web Board at http://alumni.austinc.edu:8080/~3 (password required)

NOTE: If you'd like to follow these instructions as you work with the web board, you can have two Netscape/browser screens open. Before you go any further, try looking under the browser's FILE command (in the very top set of menus) to OPEN A NEW BROWSER. You can then tell the second browser to go to the AC Web Board site, and leave these instructions accessible. If you are new to Windows, ask a friend or a lab assistant to help you do this.

First Timers Only (see below for General Use)

1. Go to the AC Web Board site: http://alumni.austinc.edu:8080/~3

2. You will be asked to log in with your username and password.

Note: These names and passwords were keyed in by your very human professor, whose typing skills are entirely fallible. If after two tries of typing in what you are pretty convinced is indeed your first initial and last name, donÕt try any further: call or e-mail me immediately and IÕll check on the names.

3. You will be greeted by the Welcome screen. It will show that you are a member of both the HWC 55 10:00 and the HWC 55 11:00 conference. If it does not show this in the left hand part of the screen, call or e-mail me immediately.

4. Please check and modify your user information:

5. Click Save (at the bottom of the page)

6. Click More Options. If you have changed your password as recommended, you may get a box noting that ÒAuthorization Failed.Ó Click on ÒRetry,Ó and when the new log-on box comes up, enter your new password to log on again using your brand new identity.

7. Proceed to Step 3 listed below.

General Procedures:

1. Go to the AC Web Board site: http://alumni.austinc.edu:8080/~3

2. Log in with your username and password. If you have forgotten your password, you will need to contact your professor or one of the Web Board Administrators through Academic Computing.

3. To FIND messages, click on any line in the left-hand frame with a plus sign (+) before it to reveal what else is contained under that heading.

4. If you have more to say on this topic, you should REPLY to the message. In the mini-menu just above the topic and author information, click ÒReply.Ó Type your message in the message window, and click Post (see ÒOptionsÓ below).

5. If you have ideas about another topic, you should POST a message with a NEW TOPIC header.

OPTIONS AND CAUTIONS FOR ADDING MESSAGES

Topic Headers: If you REPLY, the program will automatically keep the same topic header as the previous message; please let this topic header stand with little or no modification.

Copy and Paste: You may use standard Copy and Paste commands to insert text into the message window; if you compose a post in a word processor, you may copy the text from the word-processing document, switch windows to the web-board, and paste your text in the message window. You may also copy and paste web-site addresses or information from other messages or web pages.

Preview and Spell Check: ÒPreview & Spell CheckÓ is turned on as a default option; you may click in the appropriate box to turn that option off. If you leave it on, you will see an intermediate window after you click ÒPostÓ the first time: that window will show you your message as it will appear on the web-board, and it will highlight any potentially misspelled word. You may make changes if you wish, and then click ÒPost.Ó

Which Web Conference? You may read and post to either of the HWC web conferences. However, for your post to be counted as a MAJOR POST, it must go to the conference for your own discussion section.
