For this Family Tree assignment, each student will have to:
1. Create a family
tree
A. Create your family tree in PowerPoint including your grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. The family tree should fit on one slide and should include at least 12 family members.
B. If you do not have photographs of all your family members, you may substitute pictures from magazines or downloaded images from the web (see #2, copyright section below).
C. Photographs and pictures from magazines should be scanned and saved in a jpeg format. Images from the web should be saved in their original format (jpeg or gif).
D. Open the pictures in Photoshop Elements program.
E. Since all images should be of equal size (crop, resize, etc.), manipulation of the images should be done in the following order:
1. Using Photoshop Elements, crop the images to include only the faces.
2. Resize all the images so they are the same size. Keep in mind that all images must fit on one slide, so you will probably need to make them the size of a postage stamp.
3. Change resolution to 72 pixels/inch.
4. The final image should be saved in its original format. If you are saving the image in a jpeg format, the image quality should be set at medium.
You may scan your pictures at the StarLab in
F. Open PowerPoint and insert the pictures into a blank presentation (see example). Click and drag the pictures to the appropriate location on the family tree. Use the Line tool to draw lines between the family members’ pictures. For detailed instructions on how to perform manipulated images in Photoshop Elements and insert and rearrange pictures in PowerPoint, please see: http://cas.gmu.edu/tac/workshops/image_spring04/studentresources.html. Once completed, save slide to a floppy disk or CD to turn in to instructor (see Family Tree example).. Print off two copies of your family tree: 1. Completed and 2. With the pictures cut out.

Class
Activity
Student A gives pictures to Student B and reads his/her description twice to partner. Student B needs to create a family tree based on the information that she/he hears. After completing the tree, Student A asks Student B 5 questions (see Appendix A) and will evaluate the accuracy of family tree based on knowledge of family vocabulary. This sheet will be turned in to the instructor. Once completed, the partners switch roles and Student B reads his/her description while Student A uses the pictures to create a family tree and answers questions at the end. Questions will be provided by the Instructor.
2. Copyright issues
Each student should be able to use his/her own family photos to complete this activity. If not, they can capture images from the web or from magazines. To obtain free photos, each student can do a search using the words “free photos” or “free images”. If they use images of famous people, they will need to site each source website at the bottom of their slide (or create Slide #2 for copyright info). They will not be able to copy a copyrighted image from the web.
