Course Description and Objectives:

In this course you will study the following skills:
--basic grammar structures including the present continuous tense, the future tense, the simple past tense, the simple present tense, count vs. non-count nouns, comparatives and superlatives, pronouns, and basic modal auxiliaries
--personal and expressive writing at the sentence and paragraph level and beyond
--vocabulary including word forms, new words, and strategies for remembering and reviewing new words
--reading including skimming, scanning, finding the main idea, pronoun reference, vocabulary in context and making inferences
--basic spelling patterns in English

Course Requirements:

1.  Come to class on time.
2.  Participate actively in class.  Raise your hand and volunteer to answer questions.  Ask questions when you do not understand.  Do not speak your native language when you are in your English class.
3.  Do all homework assignments and letters.
4.  Use your own words in all your assignments.  In other words, do not copy from books!
5.  Turn off your cell phone when you are in class.

Grades:

Your grade in this class will be based on:
Homework assignments, letters, and cultural observations journal  (40%)
Tests and quizzes (40%)
Book project (no plagiarism allowed!)  5%
Final exam  (15%)
 A = 90-100
 B = 80-89
 C = 70-79
 NG  (No Grade) = below 70 or more than 10 absences

Attendance:

Attendance is very important.  If you do not come to class, you cannot participate in class activities and your grade will be lower.  If you are more than 10 minutes late for class, you will receive half an absence.  If you are absent from core class more than 10 times, you will receive an NG.
