This page provides information on participating in our research on the work experiences of pregnant women. For additional information, feel free to contact us using the information at the bottom of this page.

Who are the researchers?

The primary investigator is Eden King, a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at George Mason University (Fairfax, VA). The goal of Dr. King’s research is to improve the workplace for women and families. The research team also includes two graduate students from GMU, Veronica Gilrane and Kristen Jones.

What is the purpose of the study?

The intersection of work and pregnancy represents a particularly challenging aspect of the work-life interface, as pregnant women must navigate new roles and dynamic responsibilities in both work and home domains. The purpose of this research is to explore the experiences of expectant mothers by tracking events and emotions as they occur throughout pregnancies. We hope that this research will point to factors that increase positive (and decrease negative) work-pregnancy experiences. Overall, this research will help guide research and practice on the work-life interface by building understanding of the experiences of pregnant workers.

Why participate?

By participating, you can contribute to knowledge about how women balance pregnancy and work. Participants will receive a total of $100 in online gift certificates.

Who can participate?

To participate, the following must be true about you:

  • You are currently pregnant and in your second trimester
  • You are employed
  • You are at least 18 years old

We are looking for participants who are diverse in age, gender, ethnicity, work experience, and socioeconomic status. Our study is designed to preserve your confidentiality at work, and we will not share your survey responses with anybody outside of our research team.

What does participating involve?

If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete an initial online questionnaire that will take about 30 minutes. You will also be asked to complete shorter (10 minute) online questionnaires weekly for the remainder of your pregnancy. We will ask you to provide an email address where we can contact you to send your online gift cards and survey reminders. We will also use this email address to link your responses on each survey to each other, but will delete your email address at the conclusion of data collection.
