Al-Khwarizmi

Date of Birth: c. 780

Date of Death: c. 850

Muhammad Ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi was an astronomer and Muslim mathematician who studied in Dar Al Hikma "House of Wisdom" in Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age. Al-Khwarizmi created the concept of Algorithms, which is derived from his name in Latin, Algorism. The technique Algorism, was used to perform arithmetic by using the Hindu-Arabic numerals. Al-Khwarizmi introduced Europe to the Hindu-Arabic, which became widespread and took over the Roman Numerals that were being used since the expansion of the Roman Empire. He called this technique Al-Jabr, which translates to "restoration of broken parts". This is more famously referred to as Algebra, which is what people are most familiar with today. This is why he is referred to as the Father of Algebra. Al-Khwarizmi published the book "Al-Kitab-Mukhtasar fi Hisab al-Jabr wa-al-Muqabala", which translates to " The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing". This book taught how to solve both linear and quadratic equations by balancing the equations. Through Al-Khwarizmi’s ground-breaking creation of algorithms and foundational Algebra concepts, he contributed to the world of Computer Science by laying the foundation for creating computers and the process of encryption for the people later on in the early 20th century. For this reason, Al-Khwarizmi coined the term Grandfather of Computer Science.
