Sample Schedule of Activities for Technical Writing Workshops

Session One:
Hello and introductions.
Some questions to begin with: What is composition? What is rhetoric and
why does it matter? What constitutes good, effective writing? Can one
improve one's writing?
More specific questions:
Why do people write and for what ends? What kind of writing do partipants enact on the job? What problems do they face?
Writing: Exploring yourself as a writer/communicator

Session Two:
Sharing writing in groups.
Illustrating the problems writers face.
The process of writing: Freewriting, prewriting, planning, anticipating audience awareness, drafting.
Composing a draft.

Session Three:
Editing and revising: editing anonymous pieces of writing.
Participants bring in a piece of writing for close examination.
Editing actual participant papers.
A review of common grammatical errors.

Session Four:
More lessons in linguistic precision and grammatical fluidity.
A brief examination focusing on grammar and usage. Discussion of examination. Commonly occuring writing errors.

Session Five:
The art of revision and style: a technique for gaining clarity and precision in
prose.

Session Six:
Responding to writing done by participants. Writers' workshop of
participants' writing. Collaboratieve writing.

Session Seven:
Individual conferences to discuss writing with each participant.
During this session I will meet individually with participants to diagnose
writing problems.

Session Eight:
Reflecting on the session. Writing about the experience.
Final thoughts about the course.
