Annotated Bibliography
Locate five sources on one of the following topics in any of the GMU Library databases.
- Influences / history of Early jazz
- History of Modern jazz (bop, be-bop, free jazz)
- Any modern jazz performer (including reviews)
- Any modern jazz style (including reviews)
- Other topics are acceptable if approved in advance
Evaluate these five sources using the the following criteria:
- Currency: How recent is the source? Is it still current?
- Authority: What are the author's credentials? If there is no author, what is the authority of the publisher?
- Reliability: Do other sources confirm the information? Are there factual errors?
- Bias: Assume all sources have some degree of bias. Possible sources of bias include observational, professional, theoretical, political, financial, and personal;. Bias does not necessarily invalidate a source, but you should be aware of it.
- Logic: Look for both deductive and inductive arguments in the source. Are deductive arguments properly constructed? Are the premises justified? Are inductive arguments supported by concrete, specific, representative examples?
Each annotation should be at least one paragraph, typed and double spaced. Use the following format:
Citation (any appropriate style). The sources should be presented in alphabetical order by author's last name.
Evaluation. You should evaluate each source according to several of the criteria above; you do not need to use all of the criteria for each sourceuse the criteria you feel are relevant.
75% of the grade will be based on the evaluation; 25% of the grade wil be based on the citation.
