Essay #4 (Music 107 Term Paper)

Part I

Attend a live performance of a jazz concert on or off campus. Write a detailed review of the performance. Include

1. Compositions performed with composers/arrangers names.
2. Style (bop, dixie, latin, funk, fusion, swing etc.)
3. Instrumentation.
4. Your personal view of the music on an intellectual level and on a feeling level.

Part II
Choose one of the jazz artists discussed in your Music 107 class and listen to an entire CD. Do not use the CD that accompanies the text.

1. Include a brief biographical sketch.
2. Discuss the artist’s influences and contribution.
3. Pick one song from the CD and discuss form, arrangement, rhythmic devices, tone quality, expressive devices, dramatic devices and material used in the improvisation.

Unlike the other essays in this course, the final essay cannot be revised. We will, however, have a peer review session in class.
