After stumbling through a few of the hypertext websites that were assigned to me in class
(Stuart Moulthrop’s “Hegirascope”, “Vniverse” by Stephanie Strickland, and “Stained Word
Window” also by Deena Larsen) I was pleasantly surprised by Deena Larsen’s “Firefly”.
I found that out of all of the literary hypertexts I have seen, “Firefly” was easily the most effective.
However while looking at the poem, I had no idea why I thought it was the most effective, I just
knew I liked it the most. So I then had to ask myself, what makes an effective literary hypertext,
and does Deena Larsen follow the criteria necessary to achieve an effective hypertext? To answer
these questions, one must look at the criteria for creating an effective hypertext. Throughout this
website I will use the given criteria to compare “Firefly” to the three pieces of literary hypertext
listed above to prove that it is the most effective of the group.
