The history of Western Civilization is a study
of the ideas, customs, and institutions that developed primarily in Europe,
the Americas, and their associated colonies and settlements throughout the
world. This civilization is different in many ways from African and Asian
civilizations, but certainly not isolated from them. The idea of a survey
course in Western Civilization is not an attempt to exclude or minimize
other civilizations, but to trace the broad historical path from the birth
of civilization to the predominant culture of this particular part of the
world.
Because this survey covers such a wide area over such a long span of
time, it is divided into three chronological units. The first
unit begins with a look at the beginnings of civilization in the Ancient
Near East and traces the history of Western Civilization through Ancient
Greece and Rome. The second unit surveys
the world of the Middle Ages and the formation of European civilization.
The third unit looks at the world of Early
Modern Europe, including the Renaissance, the Reformations and the Age
of Exploration and Discovery.
