The new tools available to hypertext authors gives them the power to interact with their audience like never before. Like Deena Larsen’s Firefly, authors are able to allow the reader to actively engage with their works. This engaging quality brings the reader into a new relationship with the piece, a much more personal relationship. Hypertext authors are also able to use old literary tools in conjunction with their new media tools to express things to their audience in a completely new way. In Firefly Larsen uses not only her language, but also the background images to express to the audience the mood of the piece. Hypertext authors are able to bring audiences into a new world of interaction, sometimes a hypertext can be completely endless, but in Firefly’s case the use of an ending is part of the message of the piece, that some connections are impossible to be made. Deena Larsen’s hypertext Firefly uses the new tools available to artists and gives readers a new way to read, interact, respond, and understand pieces of literature.
