December 8, 2005 (7:05 AM)
I posted a link to the correct answer (with explanation) for the last quiz, and comments about the next quiz, on the quiz web page. Also, I forgot to announce Monday night that I posted the extra credit problems pertaining to Ch. 10 of S&W (which I will cover tonight) on the homework web page.
December 1, 2005 (4:51 PM)
I modified the web page pertaining to the final exam to show that the extra weekend office hours will be held in our regular classroom.

November 19, 2005 (8:42 PM)
I updated the web page pertaining to the final exam, listing extra office hours that I will be having, and describing the exam in considerable detail.
November 12, 2005 (11:43 PM)
I posted a link to the correct answers (with explanation) for the last quiz, and comments about the next quiz, on the quiz web page. I also posted some more answers/solutions to the homework problems on the homework solutions web page. I still have some extra tickets (that I got for free through GMU) for the Capitals game on Tuesday (11/15) at 7 PM. Let me know soon if you want to go to the game --- I may not have extra tickets for long.
November 12, 2005 (8:46 PM)
I worked to get ahead today, and I posted the homework problems for the rest of the semester on the homework web page, except that I may add some more extra credit problems after the last lecture. I hope to post some more answers/solutions to homework problems soon. Also, I might slightly change the point values for some of the problems I posted today in order to make the total points come out to be a nice value.
November 10, 2005 (6:39 AM)
Here is some info about the midterm scores: Now I'll report on what the totals are if I add the midterm score (out of 10 points) to the best 7 of 9 quiz scores. Fortunately, the students with the lower midterm and quiz scores have decent homework scores, and so at this point no one seems to be in jeopardy of getting a bad grade. I think that the important thing at this stage in the semester is to just stay on top of the homework. I advise that you try to work the problems enough ahead of time so that you can ask about parts that puzzle you. Perhaps the way you'll learn the most is to really get into the homework --- engage the problems, as opposed to just going through the motions without giving them a lot of thought and consideration.
November 8, 2005 (11:28 PM)
I posted a link to the correct answers (with explanation) for the last quiz, and comments about the next quiz, on the quiz web page. By the way, if any of you are hockey fans and can go to the Capitals game next Tuesday (11/15) night, let me know --- I might have some extra tickets (that I got for free through GMU). (I can't say for sure now, but I'll know if I have extra ones by class time on Thursday --- so let me know if you want to go.)
October 30, 2005 (2:02 AM)

October 27, 2005 (3:44 AM)
Here and here are two files of data pertaining to the midterm exam. I also indicate in the midterm that I will provide instructions for creating the differences needed for Problem 5. After you paste the before and after values into two columns of the Data Editor, and name them before and after, you can use Transform > Compute. Type diff in as the name for the Target Variable, highlight and click after into the Numeric Expression box, add a minus sign, and then click in before. Finally, click OK.
October 23, 2005 (10:38 PM)
I posted some homework problems that are due on 11/3 on the homework web page. Note that these are due at the same time the midterm is, but of course you can take advantage of the grace period for the homework. Since this set of problems is rather substantial, I'm making the midterm a bit easier and shorter than last year's exam. I encourage you to get started on these asap --- some of them might clarify some things that will be addressed on the midterm (even though the midterm covers up through the end of Ch. 8 and these problems pertain to Ch. 9). Although there are a lot of problems, with a lot of parts, many of the parts can be done using SPSS and shouldn't take a lot of time. (So quit complaining (I know that you are) and get busy.)
October 23, 2005 (12:03 AM)
I posted comments about the seventh quiz, along with a link to the correct answers (with explanation), and comments about the next quiz, on the quiz web page. I'll also announce that I won a major prize in the poker tournament held at GMU on Saturday!
October 20, 2005 (2:58 AM)
I posted answers/solutions to the homework problems that were turned in last week on the homework solutions web page. Less than half of the class got Problem 26 perfect, and several did rather poorly on it. Some of you generated P-P plots instead of Q-Q plots. If you missed any of the matchings for Problem 26, I encourage you to start over and try it again.
October 15, 2005 (1:04 PM)
I posted some homework problems that are due on 10/27 on the homework web page. I posted some answers/solutions to more of the homework problems that are not to be turned in on the homework solutions web page.

October 10, 2005 (11:59 PM)
I posted some homework problems that are due on 10/20 on the homework web page. I plan to post some answers/solutions to more of the homework problems that are not to be turned in a bit later tonight. And I will post some info about Problem 26 very soon. (That was the problem where the incorrect data on the S&W CD made life difficult for some of you.)

September 29, 2005 (6:31 AM)
I graded the first set of HW problems that were turned in, and I'm happy to report that all of the scores were in the interval [8.0, 10.0] (with 10 being the highest possible score). The class median is 9.95.
September 28, 2005 (2:37 AM)
I posted answers/solutions to the homework problems that were turned in last week on the homework solutions web page.
September 27, 2005 (6:47 AM)
I posted some answers/solutions to more of the homework problems that are not to be turned in on the homework solutions web page. Let me know if anything seems wrong --- I think I got them all linked correctly, but I worry a bit that I might a mistake by not labeling the answers correctly (e.g., putting the answer to Problem 30 under the heading for Problem 32). Also let me know if you need more info about using SPSS --- I think if you study the solutions to the problems not to be turned in, you can see how to use SPSS for the ones you should turn in.)
September 26, 2005 (8:17 AM)
I posted some homework problems that are due on 10/6 on the homework web page. I plan to post some answers/solutions to the problems that are not to be turned in a bit later (after I sleep --- I stayed up all night again ... trying to help a researcher in health sciences with her data analysis.)
September 24, 2005 (2:18 PM)
I posted comments about the third quiz, along with a link to the correct answers (with explanations), and comments about the next quiz, on the quiz web page. I aim to post new homework problems today.
September 19, 2005 (7:39 AM)
I posted some homework problems that are due on 9/29 on the homework web page. I also posted some answers/solutions to more of the homework problems that are not to be turned in on the homework solutions web page.
September 19, 2005 (3:10 AM)

September 18, 2005 (3:29 AM)
I posted comments about the second quiz, along with a link to the correct answers (with explanations), on the quiz web page. I aim to post new homework problems and hints about the next quiz later today.
September 12, 2005 (7:11 AM)
I posted some answers/solutions to more of the homework problems that are not to be turned in on the homework solutions web page. I posted some hints about this week's quiz on the quiz web page. Also, I added a link to the Software section of the syllabus web page --- the link is to a site where one can rent the SPSS Graduate Pack for 6 months.
September 11, 2005 (12:29 AM)
I posted some homework problems that are due on 9/22 on the homework web page. None of the 4 problems for which you are to turn in answers/solutions are very hard. Hopefully you can try them before class on 9/15 so that you can identify if there is anything that you don't understand. The problems that I posted for which you are not to turn in answers/solutions are rather similar, so if you get stuck on any of the ones to be turned in, try the problems not to be turned in so that we can discuss those during office hour time if necessary. Some of the problems not to be turned in have answers in the back of the book. Tomorrow night I plan to post some explanations to these problems, and going over my explanations may be helpful with regard to working the problems to be turn in.
September 9, 2004 (12:40 AM)
I posted comments about the first quiz, along with a link to the correct answers (with explanations), on the quiz web page.
September 5, 2005 (2:07 AM)
I posted some comments about the little quiz for this coming Thursday on the quiz web page.
September 4, 2005 (6:40 PM)
I posted some exercises that you can try on the homework web page, and I posted some solutions on the homework solutions web page. (Note: One of the exercises has the answers in the back of the book.) I should have remembered from the past two times I taught the class that we don't get far enough into the material to make it worthwhile to assign problems to be turned in based on the first class meeting.
August 29, 2005 (6:04 PM)
I finished updating this web site to make it ready for the start of the new semester. If you looked at the web site prior to 6:04 PM today, then you either were looking at the version of the web site for the Fall 2004 semester, or else you caught me in the middle of editing the web site over the past 24 hours or so. For now, please read the information on the welcome page and then check back later for other information.
