PWE Program Requirements

Students pursuing a M.A. in English with a concentration in Professional Writing and Editing are required to complete 30 credits (10 courses), with classes required in the following areas:

  • Research Methodology
  • Professional/Writing Courses
  • Literary, Linguistic, Cultural, and Rhetorical Studies
  • Thesis

The PWE requirements were revised in 2005. The major change from the previous requirements was the addition of the core class: ENGL 501 – Introduction to Professional Writing and Editing. The class was not offered previously but is now required for PWE students who started in 2006 or after.

All PWE students are required to take ENGL 799: Thesis. This is the last class they take before graduating and should focus on their area of interest. A research class (ENGL 506 – Research for Narrative Writing or ENGL 701 – Literary Scholarship) is required and will help students gather information about a topic of interest.

All classes are offered in the evenings, usually from either 4:30 – 7:10 p.m. or 7:20 – 10 p.m.

Details about classes and requirements can be found on the advising sheets:

The English Department website and College of Health and Human Sciences website have additional information about the PWE program.
