Neo-liberalism--What is it? Many readers are unfamiliar with the term neo-liberalism, so lets define and explain its importance. Elizabeth Martinez and Arnoldo Garcia, with the National Network for Immigrant and Refugge Rights explain, "Economic liberalism is different. Conservative politicians who say they hate "liberals" -- meaning the political type -- have no real problem with economic liberalism, including neoliberalism...Neo means we are talking about a new kind of liberalism." Martiniz and Garcia further explain, "Neo-liberalism is a set of economic policies that have become widespread during the last 25 years or so. Although the word is rarely heard in the United States, you can clearly see the effects of neo-liberalism here as the rich grow richer and the poor grow poorer...Around the world, neo-liberalism has been imposed by powerful financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and the Inter- American Development Bank....the capitalist crisis over the last 25 years, with its shrinking profit rates, inspired the corporate elite to revive economic liberalism. That's what makes it 'neo' or new.Neoliberalism is not simply an economic structure, it is a philosophy. This is most visible in attitudes to society, the individual and employment. Neo-liberals tend to see the world in term of market metaphors. " Anup Shah takes note of Martinez and Garcia's work and reiterates, “despite popular perceptions, the opposite of fascism is not communism but anarchism (ie liberal socialism), and that the opposite of communism (i.e. an entirely state-planned economy) is neo-liberalism (i.e. extreme deregulated economy).” What is the result of of a extremely deregulated economy? Profits become more important than people. The public seems to be brainwashed by the word capitalism; when they hear the word positive images of healthy trade and free markets come to mind. Neo-liberalism is capitalism out of control. People should hear the word capitalism today, and immediatly picture fascism--death, famine, and dictatorship. Call me an extremist! But, it is true, and I want you to research it, understand it, and fight against it. Neoconservatives will conquer democracy at all costs! |
