After the terrorist highjacking of four planes on September 11th, 2001, news mediums everywhere have been packed full of news and facts about terrorism. Strict security measures were taken, specifically in the United States, and people throughout the world were stunned by how drastically terrorism can affect a nation. There are many different ways that terrorists can strike, but probably the most frightening and quiet way that terrorism can occur is through a method called cyberterrorism. Cyberterrorism is defined by Encarta’s online dictionary as a “sabotage of computer systems through the Internet: terrorist activity using computers or the Internet to destroy, control, or otherwise damage complex electronic systems” (Dictionaries). This type of scenario could happen anywhere to anybody. It could happen to a person’s home computer or to any government’s computer system, which is what makes cyberterrorism such a threat. The fact that it could strike at any point and any time is a significant threat to today’s high-tech society, in which any average person can acquire the computer equipment necessary to do anything they desire, whether that be good or bad.
