I have asked you to buy the following three books:
Charles Hauss, Comparative Politics, 2nd ed.
Christian Soe, Comparative Politics: Annual Editions, 1998-1999.
Daniel Yergin and Joseph Stanislaw, Commanding Heights
My book is a standard textbook. Because I wrote it and is summarizes my "take" on the material, we will be able to spend less time in conventional lecture and more time discussing what is in it. The Soe book is a reader that mostly includes recent articles from newspapers and magazines and is designed to help keep you up to date. The book by Yergin and Stanislaw is a controersial new look at the decline in the role most governments play in managing their country's economy.
Despite having assigned the Soe book, you will discover that the readings are out of date for all the countries, and I expect dramatic changes in most of them during the semester. Therefore, it is in your best interest to keep up to date via the Internet and by reading a daily newspaper, preferably the New York Times, Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, Wall Street Journal, or Financial Times. The Times, Post, and many other daily papers are available for free on the Internet.
