I have adapted the following criteria used for grading advanced placement exams in government and politics:
A: Well developed thesis carried through the entire paper and used to answer all aspects of the question using a broad array of appropriate examples.
B: Either weak thesis or one that does not go beyond what is covered in class or readings. Presents good evidence and demonstrates solid understanding of the factual material, but tends to describe rather than analyze. Or good thesis poorly supported with evidence.
C: Examples are not well related to a relatively underdeveloped thesis. Covers basic facts only and/or is confused about key facts and concepts. Often has rudimentary or stereotypical generalizations. If there is a thesis, it is usually weak or unsupported.
D: Poor knowledge of subject matter. Serious factual errors. No thesis development.
F: No knowledge of relevant subject matter/no paper handed in.
