Internet Resources on Japanese Politics

Despite its position as world technological leader, Japan does not have all that many Internet websites--at least dedicated to political material. That is rapidly changing. And, because most people's computers cannot readily handle Japanese characters, most come with an English as well as a Japanese language version.

Japan Window is by far the best general source of material on politics--and everything else--there. Through it, you can get to all the major Japanese governmental offices, parties, and other bodies that have home pages.

The Japan Information Network has general material as well, including quite a bit on politics.

The Austrialian National University maintains a wonderful virtual library site for Japan.

Tokyo University's Institute for Social Sciences also has an excellent website, but it is probably more useful to professors and other professional researchers than to students, at least at the introductory level.

Sheffield University's is another good site maintained by an academic research center.

Twics is a commercial service that has very good coverage of economic and business issues.

The Japan Times provides a weekly update of Japanese news as does the more episodic What's New in Japan service. Surprisingly, there is no listserv that regularly sends out Japanese news via email.
