Resources on Current and Former Communist Regimes

The crisis of communism occurred before the Internet got off the ground. Had the chronological order been reversed, there would be plenty of websites that gathered material on all or most of the current and former communist countries. Since things did not happen that way, there are no places where these countries are treated as a group in cyberspace. The best resources one can find in the mid-1990s are those that combine the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. For sources on individual countries, go to the pages on Russia and China.

FBIS (The Foreign Broadcast Information Service) has long been the best source of translated material from the press of current and former communist countries. Much of its material is now available on line. Note, though, that there is a hefty fee for this service.

OMRI (Open Market Research Institute) offers both a summary of the daily press and analyses of politics in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. You can also get its newsfeed via email by subscribing to its listserv, OMRI-L, at listserv@ubvm.cc.buffalo.edu. OMRI is the privatized version of the former Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

Otherewise, your best sources are to be found through academic research centers that deal with the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Among the most comprehensive of them are:

The University of Michigan

The University of Pittsburgh

The University of Washington
