The Color Blue

Blue is so cool!

Blue is a universal favorite and it is very versatile as a cool tone. It would be hard to imagine a world without denim blue jeans, or the "B" in Roy G. Biv. Blue is a primary color, but it can be very difficult to "match" with other blues because of its variety of shades. Most often, the color blue is associated with the sky and the ocean, prompting many obnoxious children to ask the question parents like to defer: "Why is the sky blue?" Blue is used in various types of marketing, such as the "Blue Light Specials" at K-Mart (which, incidentally, did not work out well for them). Many different countries, such as the United States and England, use blue in their flags. In the US, the typical color to celebrate the birth of a baby boy is blue, whereas pink is associated with girls.

The word "blue" has become a colloquial term for "feeling depressed," and it has a variety of other meanings. For example, to be "blue-blooded" is to have aristocratic lineage. The "blues" is a type of mournful music that is popular in the United States. Otherwise, blue is thought to evoke cleanliness, peace, and serenity. Darker hues of blue connote authority, which is why corporations tend to integrate the color into their massive empires of oppression.

Notably, Pablo Picasso went through what is now called the Blue Period because most of the paintings are done in varying shades of blue. The paintings depict scenes of poverty and societal decline, as he was allegedly very depressed during this time.

Websites that Use the Color Blue

Some of the most popular social media websites use the color blue as the basis for their designs:

Twitter is recognized by its blue bird logo, and Facebook uses the ubiquitous blue square as its icon. The websites are customizable to an extent, but the blue color makes them both professional and accessible.
