Story 10: Best Way to get Hired?

Chip Scanlan writes his article “A Foot in the Door: The Best way to get Hired?” in response to a member of the U.S. Army who wants to know what he has to do to be hired as a journalist after he leaves the military.

Like many journalism students, this member of the military has some general ideas of what he needs to do to accomplish his goal, but would like to narrow down the key areas he should focus on to get hiredChip Scanlan suggests the following:

  • Set yourself apart from other applicants by having a specialty, like medicine or the military.
  • Remember journalism is about individual ability and not necessarily education.  Your success in getting a job depends on the kind of work you have done lately.
  • Save everything.  Keep the copies of your stories, even stories that have not yet been published and create a clip file.
  • Write a letter to the editor and include your resume and clips.

Scanlan also provides a few links to further assist students and others looking for a job in journalism.  Those applying for a job should check out The Jobs Page on the Detroit Free Presswebsite.  As well, The Washington Post has a website, JournalismNext.com, that makes it easier for minority journalists to get access to employers.  Finally, “Job Hunting: Step-by-Step,” gives some general direction in applying for a job in journalism.

Scanlan’s final recommendation to future journalists, is to search for outlets where you can publish your stories.  It does not matter where, just get them published if possible.  School papers, base papers, community or hometown papers are great places to start.  Remember, it is rare in this industry to start out in a large company.  Begin in a small market and work your way up.  Dedicate yourself to journalism and you will succeed!
