SUPERMEN
While I don't necessarily subscribe to all of Neitzsche's views, his reconstruction of Superman as a man unbridled by the whims of society and religion interests me. I have often wondered about his belief that man is in constant need of strife, always in search of tension, his soul transfixed by violence. His connection with National Socialism discomforts me. Even though his words were supposedly distorted to justify Nazi directives, his personal relationship with Richard Wagner (more like a mentor-pupil relationship) suggests that there may have been several Hitlers "waiting to happen," in the way that Wagner had profoundly influenced National Socialism well before the birth of Nazism. When exactly does fanaticism give way to hatred? Neitzsche is often referred to as one of the first "existentialist" philosophers.
