Restricted Access Web Resources for Literary Studies (for GMU users only)

This is a select list of the most valuable propriety full-text and bibliographic resources for students of literature that are available to GMU users. You will need to access these materials from a networked computer on campus, or by using the “EZ Access” button if you are using a computer that is not part of the GMU network. GMU users might also wish to consult the Web Guide prepared by the GMU Libraries for English Literature Resources, and the GMU English Department webpages. Also listed here are some desiderata: proprietary materials currently unavailable to GMU users, but highly desirable for literary studies purposes.

Table of Contents for Restricted Access Resources (GMU Only)

Desiderata (Go)

General (Go)

bibliographic ■ reference ■ primary materials ■ secondary materials ■ journals

Most resources are listed in the above “General” category; only resources specifically oriented to a particular field are placed in the categories below. Thus, the MLA International Bibliography or JSTOR appear only in the “General” category above, not under “British & Irish Literature and Culture” or any other category below. Anyone interested in one of the particular areas listed below should also consult the “General” category above. Materials on the Bible, Judaism, Christianity, Classics, and Opera will be found under “European Literature and Culture.” Materials on Islam are filed under “North Africa & the Middle East.” Works addressing all of Africa are grouped under “Sub-Saharan Africa.” Material on the Caribbean is placed in a subcategory of its own, but some relevant material will also be found in the “Latin American” category. No doubt there are other inexact, but (hopefully) not entirely counter-intuitive, categorization decisions throughout this guide.

Bibliographic database (1920- ) for studies of British, U.S., and other Anglophone literatures, with links to full texts of some contents (via JSTOR). Enter “abell” in the search box. [03/2005]. Studies have shown that ABELL does not merely duplicate records found in the MLA International Bibliography: so serious literary research in “English” requires use of both databases. Moreover, the MLA Bib. online begins from 1963 (though it includes records for JSTOR articles back to the 1880s), while ABELL goes back to 1920.
